Autoclave beyond sterilization
Beyond sterilization, autoclaves serve another significant purpose: testing the soundness of cement. Known as cement autoclaves, they are used to perform autoclave expansion tests, a vital process in the construction industries. The cement to be tested is placed in the autoclave, and subjected to high pressure and temperature. This test detects unsoundness in cement, indicating the potential for cracking and deterioration. If the specimen shows excessive expansion post-test, it signifies the cement might disintegrate or crack in service, thus, unsuitable for construction use.
